Lactation & Breastfeeding (L&B) is the Official Journal of the European Lactation Consultants Alliance (ELACTA). It imparts new, and, wherever possible, evidence-based expertise on the various areas of lactation relevant to everyday professional life, breastfeeding and breast milk feeding. It is a medium for interdisciplinary and international discussions and exchange of views, reports on events focussing on breastfeeding, provides association news and includes handouts for working with mothers and reviews of new books and products.
The journal is published four times a year in a German-language print edition (Laktation und Stillen, L&S – circulation: 3,500, ISSN 1614-807x), and an English-language digital version (Lactation & Breastfeeding L&B), which is distributed in about 34 member countries (ISSN since 2026: 3061-0915).
Lactation & Breastfeeding addresses IBCLCs in clinics and in private practice, midwives, (paediatric) nurses, doctors, parent advisers and volunteer breastfeeding counsellors.
Recognised CERPs /continuing education via online tests
ELACTA is an accredited CERP provider. ELACTA members and subscribers can earn CERPs by reading L&S or L&B and completing an online test in German or English. Non-IBCLCs can also submit their continuing education hours to their organisations: 1 CERP is equivalent to 1 continuing education hour.
=> As a rule, 2 CERPs can be earned per issue, and 8 CERPs per year.
The tests and the certificates are included in the membership and yearly subscription fees, i.e. there are no additinal costs for them.

One of the biggest challenges for ELACTA’s journal is that its members speak dozens of different languages. Although the journal is published in two languages—German and English—many members do not have a sufficient command of either language to fully understand a professional journal.
This is where AI can help us: Use AI to automatically translate articles into your native language! Many browsers have a translation function that can be used. The Google Chrome browser offers excellent translation quality – both on a PC and on a smartphone. The Deepl.com app can be installed in the Firefox browser.
In Google Chrome browser you can use the right mouse click or go to the three dots in the top right-hand corner. A menu will open. One of the menu options is ‘Translate’. You can then select the language. Or you click on the Google Translate icon in the address bar.

For ELACTA members and members of its approximately 34 partner associations, the magazine is included in the membership fee.
The German-language edition is published as a printed magazine and is sent to all members by mail.
The English-language edition was produced as a PDF until 2025 and sent electronically or downloaded from the website using a password. Starting in 2026, the English-language edition will be published directly online here. If you are an ELACTA member but do not yet have access to the full texts of Lactation & Breastfeeding, please contact your board.
