Abstract

This article examines the clinical support for breastfeeding mothers who are managing obesity through pharmaceutical interventions or have a history of bariatric surgery. It addresses the dual challenge of meeting the energetic demands of lactation while navigating the physiological constraints imposed by weight-loss treatments.

Key areas of focus include pharmacological compatibility, with a review of common weight-loss medications and post-bariatric surgery management including an exploration of how surgeries such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass impact nutrient absorption. We also consider clinical support and the role of the IBCLC and dietitian in helping mothers balance caloric restrictions for a healthy milk supply.
