Providing Hospital Staff Training – My Very Special Area of Work as an IBCLC

Abstract

I became a hospital training course instructor more or less by chance – this arose as a result of my practical work as an IBCLC in a hospital and the desire to pass on my knowledge. What I started out doing with a sense of uncertainty developed over the years into a key area of my freelance work. Nowadays, training courses for hospital teams are not only about conveying the latest scientific information, but also about reflecting together about attitudes, structures and how to implement breastfeeding-friendly care in practice. Topics that come up time and time again such as bonding, laid-back breastfeeding (biological nurturing) and dealing with guidelines show how important ongoing training and interdisciplinary dialogue are. Quality in breastfeeding support requires knowledge, reflection – and above all, time for development.
