From 14 to 16 May 2026, Bucharest welcomed more than 250 participants from 35 countries for the 14th ELACTA Conference, Breastfeeding Insights Shaping the Future. Three memorable days brought together IBCLCs, healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates committed to advancing lactation care and supporting breastfeeding families.
The pre-conference day combined interactive workshops with morning and afternoon visits to Romania’s first human milk bank, located at Marie Curie Emergency Children’s Hospital. Participants were welcomed by Dr Cîrstoveanu and Dr Enyedi and had the opportunity to learn more about the vital role of donor human milk in caring for vulnerable newborns. The day concluded with a warm welcome reception accompanied by classical music, creating a wonderful atmosphere for reconnecting with colleagues and establish new professional connections.
The two-day main conference opened with reflections from ELACTA President Mihaela Niță and ACLR (Romanian Lactation Consultant Association) President Ilinca Tudose-Tranulis, as well as a special message from the Romanian Presidential Administration, delivered by Mirabela Grădinaru, the partner of the President of Romania.
The scientific programme explored timely and thought-provoking subjects, including online health misinformation, the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, lip and tongue ties, early oral experiences and taste development, hormonal changes throughout the lifespan, infant allergies, lactation science, and family-centred care. The outstanding speakers inspired lively discussions and moments of deep reflection, as well as standing ovations and tears of joy and compassion.
On 15 May, after the day’s conference sessions, ELACTA members gathered for the General Assembly. The financial positions of both ELACTA and the journal Lactation & Breastfeeding were presented, followed by the auditor’s report, which was delivered via video and included important insights and recommendations. Members also received an overview of ELACTA’s activities. During the elections, Anja Bier was elected to the ELACTA Board, and the community expressed its sincere gratitude to Livia Bratu as she concluded her service as a Board member.
Oral and poster presentations also highlighted valuable contributions from researchers and practitioners. The winners of the two categories received complimentary registration for the next ELACTA Conference, recognising their work and encouraging their continued contribution to the lactation field.
Beyond the scientific sessions, the conference offered many opportunities for connection and cultural exchange. The conference Scientific Dinner introduced international guests to Romanian traditional music, dance, and cuisine in a beautiful historic building from the interwar period. Organised visits in Bucharest and the surrounding mountain region allowed participants to discover some of Romania’s history, culture, and landscapes.
During the conference, the ELACTA Board also held two important meetings with representatives of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). These discussions provided an opportunity to reflect on shared priorities and explore future collaboration to strengthen the recognition and development of the IBCLC profession.
ELACTA extends its sincere gratitude to the ELACTA Board, the Romanian Association of Lactation Consultants (ACLR), the scientific committee, speakers, presenters, poster authors, volunteers, sponsors, partners, and all participants who helped make the Bucharest conference such a meaningful event.
Special thanks go to Livia Bratu, the conference coordinator, whose dedication, care, and months of hard work were instrumental in making the event possible.
The conference may have ended, but its conversations, collaborations, and inspiration continue. We look forward to meeting again at the ELACTA Conference 2028 in Vilnius.
Mihaela Niță, ELACTA President
