Breastfeeding Babies with Down Syndrome: Results of a parent survey of children born between 2020 and 2024

Abstract

Breastfeeding is also possible for babies with Down syndrome and has significant health benefits, particularly for such children. A recent survey of over 330 families provides, for the first time, comprehensive insights into the breastfeeding experiences of parents of children with Down syndrome. It shows that with patience, good professional guidance and a supportive environment, breastfeeding can succeed – despite frequent obstacles. This article examines the role of professionals, the challenges parents face and what parents wish for the future. The results provide important suggestions for improving breastfeeding-friendly structures in hospitals, counselling services and society.

Pia MüllerDr. Pia Müller is an IBCLC, a volunteer AFS breastfeeding counsellor (www.afs-stillen.de) and the mother of five children. Her daughter, born in 2021, lives with Down syndrome. As part of World Breastfeeding Week 2024, Pia Müller conducted a parent survey in Germany on the subject of “Breastfeeding babies with Down syndrome”.
