As more International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) consider establishing private practices, many are seeking guidance on how to navigate the professional, practical, and personal aspects of this transition. This article explores the key components of setting up a private IBCLC practice, including identifying services in demand, setting appropriate fees, addressing legal, insurance, and record-keeping responsibilities, and choosing between home visits, office consultations, or virtual care. It also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, effective referral networks, and maintaining professional boundaries to avoid burnout. Common challenges such as imposter syndrome, unpredictable income, and the discomfort of marketing are discussed alongside strategies for resilience and success. With reflective insights and practical advice, the article offers support and encouragement for IBCLCs who are seeking autonomy and impact through private practice, while remaining grounded in ethical, client-centred care.
